We often get asked, if this has been around for ages why have I only just heard about it? Well that’s simple, since the floods of 2007 we have started to take the risk of flooding seriously. The Pitt review in 2007 made some independent recommendations to help ease the strain on the countries flood defences. In 2008 the government set out their long term vision for water and the framework for water management in England. With the strategy in place, in 2010 The flood and water management act was introduced. It draws together the previous recommendations of the Pitt Review and the strategy of Future Water for England thereby giving effect to the WFD in the UK and providing a cohesive approach to water management. Authorities are now required to develop flood risk management strategies and sustainable drainage systems in certain new developments. This will help to manage and reduce the flow of surface water into the sewerage system as well to improve water quality.

Permeable paving plays a massive part in their plan. Homeowners are finding that when applying for planning permission for paved areas this is being recommended as the alternative to traditional paving types.

But what if you don’t suffer from flooding? This is quite a common question, especially for people who live on higher ground. Although you may not suffer directly, the run off from your driveway goes into the water table and can affect people further down the water table.
